Hunter & Tracking

Hunting and tracking are some of the oldest of human activities, and the invention and evolution of knives was certainly driven in large part by the need for better tools to acquire game. Modern day hunters still consider their knife to be best friend number two, right next to their rifle or bow, as it is necessary for everything from skinning and dressing to survival in the wild.

While there are many different styles of hunting and tracking knives in use around the world, here in the U.S. there are just a handful of forms that dominate the market, most based on either the spear point or drop point design – which makes it either better at stabbing, piercing, and digging in, or blade heavy and useful for slicing deep and even throwing.

Although Tom Brown Jr. may not have invented the design for the tracker, he did make it famous enough through his books, videos, and wilderness survival courses that many now consider the knife to be the standard outdoors-man’s sidekick. I have tinkered around and come up with several versions of the tracker, all made from high carbon steel with a variety of different handle lengths.

Besides the tracker, other popular hunting knife styles that I like to play with include the Bowie knife, which sports a large blade in relation to its handle, and the spear point field knife, which is popular among military units that spend lots of time in the wild, such as the rangers. I also do hook gut knives, which are used for dressing and skinning game.
